SOURCE STUDY
A nerd-style reading of a personal log: fill-ups, mileage, fuel economy and electric miles rather than brochure figures.
| Group | Type | Entries | Mileage | Economy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gen 1 / Classic | HEV, liftback | 168 | 58,566 mi | 45.3 mpg |
| Gen 2 / Iconic | HEV, liftback | 333 | 119,741 mi | 47.6 mpg |
| Gen 3 | HEV, liftback | 140 | 56,324 mi | 50.0 mpg |
| Gen 3 PHV | PHEV, liftback | 133 | 72,218 mi* | 48.1 mpg HV |
* PHV mileage = EV Miles + HV Miles; the electric part is not automatically a gasoline MPG figure.
Gen 1 yields 45.3 mpg over 58,566 miles. Gen 2 is the longest series: 333 entries and 119,741 miles. The regular Gen 3 HEV pages average about 50.0 mpg.
Regular HEV pages use miles and gallons. PHV pages add EV/HV Miles, recharges and kWh, so they deserve a separate analytical layer.
22,782 EV miles versus 48,436 HV miles means 32.9% of the observed miles were electric. The log records 2,229 recharges and roughly 6,142 calculated kWh.
This is real use of specific vehicles, not a market average. Minnesota weather, routes, E10 fuel, tyres and driving style affect the result. The figures are useful for comparing data structure and everyday scenarios, not for promising every Prius the same economy.
